Metriaclima sp."aggressive bars" is mainly living solitary in big caves in a deeper sedimentfree pure rocky habitat. They can be found on many locations among others near Hora Mhango, Charo, Kakusa, Chizumulu, Likoma and Taiwanee Reef in the Malawian part of the lake; along the central part of the eastcoast of the lake among others near Thumbi Point and Puulu in Tanzania and along the Mozambican coast among others near Tumbi Point, Mbweca, Chiloelo, Nkhungu Reef and Minos Reef. However, they are found in large numbers almost anywhere. These examples were caught in the neighbourhood of Londo. In the lake the males of these species can grow to 12 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow a little taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 14 cm, females grow to about 9 cm. Metriaclima sp."aggressive bars" is a territorial species from which the male defends his cave fiercely however also the females often defend a territory, so both can behave quite intolerant against equal species and other inhabitants. You can keep this species best with multiple females and other big mbuna in an aquarium with a lot of hiding places. In the lake probably they are mainly feeding themselves with plankton but sometimes they also eat algae which they find on the rocks. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. |
